Safety Features in the 2010 Mitsubishi Eclipse by Sofia Hills
The major safety news for the 2010 Mitsubishi Eclipse is the addition of an anti-skid system for all models. Previously, it was only available on the V6-powered Eclipse GT.
All Eclipse coupes and Spyder convertibles have standard front and side airbags. The coupes also include curtain side airbags, which are not available on the Spyder. LATCH child-seat attachments and height-adjustable front shoulder harnesses are standard, with automatic pretensioners to take up slack in a collision. Mitsubishi claims that high-strength steel reinforcements improve occupant safety in a crash, but Spyder models provide no rollover protection.
Active safety features include standard traction control, to reduce wheelspin on slippery surfaces; four-wheel disc brakes with a standard anti-lock braking system (ABS) and electronic brake force distribution (EBD), for better control in panic stops; and the Active Stability Control system, which uses the ABS and traction control system to prevent skidding in fast turns. Mitsubishi was one of the pioneers of stability control, which it first introduced in the early 1990s. All Eclipses also have daytime running lights and a tire-pressure monitoring system.
The Eclipse has excellent emergency handling, but some reviews complain of longer-than-average stopping distances and an overly stiff brake pedal that can be difficult to modulate. Despite their standard traction control, V6 models suffer annoying torque steer; the engine's power can pull the front wheels off course, especially in the lower gears. The Eclipse also has poor visibility, particular the Spyder, which suffers large blind spots with the top up.
The NHTSA has not crash-tested the current Eclipse models, but the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the similar 2009 Eclipse "Good" ratings for both front and side impacts.
